  • Alto Gemshorn in F by Cip

    Cip
    £375.00
Czech maker Pavel Cip produces an extremely well made series of gemshorns which are processed and polished very carefully. The block is made of water resistant cedar. The alto has a chromatic scale with a range of a 9th and a bottom note of F. The gemshorn was in use in the 15th century (there exists an organ stop of that name) and was primarily a pastoral instrument, not widely known after the mid-to-late 1500s until the resurgent interest in early music in the 20th century. The gemshorn is an early form of recorder, made of a cow horn with a fipple inserted at the wide end. It has an incredibly sweet sound due to the conical shape of the horn and has a range of one octave. The name comes from the German "chamois" horn, but the early history not well known, the oldest known illustration of one being seen in Musica Getutscht (1511), by Virdung. N.B. Due to the nature of these instruments each one will have a different appearance depending on the horn used!

  • Wenner Baroque Flute after Palanca in European Boxwood (a415)

    Wenner
    £2,295.00- £2,395.00
This handmade baroque flute after Palanca by German maker Martin Wenner is our best-selling baroque flute model. It is perfect for beginners to the baroque flute, especially modern flautists, due to its oval embouchure. Wenner's Palanca flute is a universal instrument that covers a wide-range of flute repertoire. It is especially suited for music by Locatelli, Platti, Händel and also J. S. Bach. As such, it is highly recommended by all the baroque flute teachers at UK music conservatoires! Carlo Palanca was an active bassoon player and instrument maker in Turin, where he died aged 95 in 1783. Unlike other baroque flutes, Palanca's instrument has an oval embouchure which gives a more powerful sound than a round embouchure. The original Palanca flute, in a private collection in Frankfurt, is made of ebony which focusses the sound even more. Nevertheless, it is not a “crude” instrument, but rather offers the player a wide range of tonal shades. The usually very muted cross-fingered notes such as F, G# and Bb are especially robust and dense on this flute. This flute is made of stained European boxwood which, like Wenner's Palanca in grenadilla , has a strong sound. The boxwood is not as brilliant in tone, but has a rich, sonorous quality which is suited to more intimate playing. It comes with a decorative, handmade soft case and Wenner's care oil.

  • Wenner Baroque Flute after Buffardin le Fils in European Boxwood

    Wenner
    £2,295.00
A new baroque flute model by German maker Martin Wenner. Pierre Gabriel Buffardin (ca. 1690–1768) was one of the most famous flutists of his time and a pioneer of the transverse flute in Germany. From 1715 to 1749, he was the first flutist of the Dresden Hofkapelle, one of the best and most famous orchestras of the time. Buffardin was a colleague of Pisendel, Veracini, Weiss and also Quantz, who he taught. Although it is documented that Buffardin was engaged in flute-making, none of his instruments has survived. It is all the more astonishing that in 2015 this flute with the signature ‘BUFFARDIN LE FILS’ appeared. The flute shows a high level of craftsmanship and represents a symbiosis of French and German flute-making. This flute is characterised by a robust and warm sound, which is enormously carrying. It is excellently suited for the interpretation of High Baroque flute music and is extremely versatile. It is made in European boxwood (natural or slightly stained) and is at a=415.

  • Wenner Baroque Flute after Rottenburgh in European Boxwood

    Wenner
    £2,295.00
This baroque flute by renowned maker Martin Wenner is after an original by G. A. Rottenburgh. Although there are several original flutes by him still surviving today, the one that is most often copied is owned by Barthold Kuijken. It is has been very well preserved and is in exceptional condition and can be heard on recordings by Kuijken. The original flute is made of boxwood which has been stained and treated with violin varnish. It has seven middle joints and is equipped with a screw-cork and foot register which can be pulled out to fit the middle joints. The flute plays very well with middle joint No. 5 at a=415 Hz, making it possible to reproduce the original without any alterations. Its round embouchure and very balanced character make the Rottenburgh a universally employable flute which can span the complete range of Baroque flute music in very sensitive style. This reconstruction by Wenner is in European boxwood, with a foot register and screw-cork, and at baroque pitch (a=415) just like the original. The surface is finished with violin varnish, enhancing the quality of sound.
