This instrument is inspired by a lute made by Wendelio Venere in 1582. The bowl consists of 13 ribs made of yew and black (maple) spacers. The neck has a solid spruce core and is veneered with ebony. The sides of the neck are planed and replaced with solid ebony for durability. The cheeks of the pegbox are solid maple veneered with yew; the back of the pegbox is closed with ebony. The fingerboard is also ebony and the bridge is pearwood that has been dyed. The pegs are hand turned and made of boxwood as well as the endpin. The bowl is varnished with the french polishing technique. The instrument has a string length of 59,5 cm and is strung with Aquila Nylgut and Aquila CD strings. The pitch is a440. The lute comes with a 35mm padded semi-rigid lightweight case.

We are grateful to David Parsons, the well known lutenist, for his guidance in designing this theorbo (bass lute). The instrument is a large chitarrone/theorbo of early 17th century and pattern based on a surviving instrument by Beuchenberg with 6 fingered single courses and 8 diapasons. Fitted with nylon strings as standard, however our luthier can set up the instrument with Aquila Nylgut for an additional £195. Includes a padded case, but a hard case is available for better long-term protection. String length: 88.5cms (fingerboard) 159.3cms (bass). We recommend the 195cm Aquila Nylgut Elastic strings for the bass strings. Since 2001 he started working together with Stefano Zanderighi, a project that would eventually led to the birth of the Liuteria d’Insieme workshop in 2003. His work is characterised by great care in researching on original models and early building and painting methods. The instruments he builds are distinguished by their great fidelity to original models without losing sight of building details and characterised by a rich and dynamic sound.

This new range of lute kits available from the Early Music Shop is based on the ever popular Hieber lutes and designed by our own dedicated team of craftspeople. The kit builds into a light and responsive instrument with a shell made from thirteen lacewood ribs, separated by narrow inlay strips. The lute is built from a quality solid sitka spruce soundboard with laser cut rose, lacewood neck, peg box and walnut fingerboard and cocuswood pegs. This kit is made to the same high specification as our finished lutes. Just follow the step by step comprehensive instruction manual complete with colour photographs and full scale drawing. An important design improvement is that the kit is supplied with a completely pre-assembled shell, which overcomes the frustrations that many kit builders found with our previous lute kits. Each part is carefully shaped ready for assembly, with only limited hand skills required. We now include a pre-cut rose to encourage those of you who are less adventurous! All parts are replaceable (should you need it) with the full back up service of our workshop. Each lute kit is supplied with a protective case which is included in the price. Please contact us if you are interested in reserving. 14 Course Archlute (Liuto Attiorbato) after Sellas by Matias Crom and supplied with padded bag “Sellas” Liuto Attiorbato made after the originals of Matteo Sellas from the Cite de la Musique in Paris. The string length is 59/88 cm with single strings on the basses. The bowl is made from 15 ribs of maple and walnut, the top is high mountain Austrian spruce and the rose is the same as in the original instrument. This lute has a fast and bright sound, with powerful basses. It can also be played using single strings on the short pegbox, for continuo playing. It is a very popular instrument with players as you can play lute repertoire, basso continuo along with being light and easy to transport. Baroque Guitar after Marianita by Matias Crom The "Marianita" is a 5 course baroque guitar inspired on the "Vihuela de Quito" with a playing string length of 68cm. The top is made from the finest mountain Austrian Spruce with the original purfling decoration and rose design. This simple yet elegant rose makes this guitar very resonant. Sides are made in 5 pieces using walnut and cypress and the back is coopered as many were from this period and made with 15 ribs of cypress with thin walnut spacers. The neck is carved from pearwood just like the original. This maker was the "Stradivari" of lute making and this model is maybe the most iconic of lutes in present time. The original string length of 64cm makes a great 8 course lute. The neck and nut sizes were changed from the original 14 course lute to accommodate 8 courses. The bowl has 9 ribs of made either Maple or Cypr es s wood with Ebony spacers. We've commissioned Stephen Haddock to produce an exclusive range of inexpensive lutes that are suitable for beginners and more advanced players. He has produced a handmade collection of 6, 7 and 8-course lutes based on an original by Giovanni Hieber. Hieber was a luthier active at the end of the 16th century in Venice. One of his 7-course lutes survives and is in Musical Instrument Museum in Brussels. It has been widely copied by today's luthiers as its string length of 59cm makes it perfect for lutes in G without much modification. Stephen uses a variety of woods and materials for this 6-course lute. Marco Golinelli attended City Lutherie School in Milan studying the construction of musical instruments with master luthiers Tiziano Rizzi and Lorenzo Lippi and musical instruments restoration with master luthier Gabriele Negri where he specialized in building instruments of the lute family as well as early guitars and mandolins. Since 2001 he started working together with Stefano Zanderighi, a project that would eventually led to the birth of the Liuteria d’Insieme workshop in 2003. His work is characterised by great care in researching on original models and early building and painting methods. The instruments he builds are distinguished by their great fidelity to original models without losing sight of building details and characterised by a rich and dynamic sound.
