In today's fourth and final Side-By-Side interview, LA-based recorder player and jazz musician Tali Rubinstein joins forces with London-based contemporary artist and 'roborecorder' pioneer Liza Bec. Meeting online for the first time during their interview, together they discuss their use of the instrument in contexts outside of classical music, along with their backgrounds in music and approaches to composition and performance.

Just like most kids, Tali Rubinstein began playing the recorder in 2nd grade. Unlike most, she never stopped. A student of Bracha Kol, Tali was professionally trained in classical baroque and renaissance music from a young age. Tali received a full tuition scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston, being the first recorder player to attend the college. In recent years, Tali has been collaborating with multiple Grammy Award winning producer Javier Limón on several projects, including: Tal y Tali (together with pianist Tal Even-Tzur), Promesas De Tierra (with musicians from Palestine, Spain, and Israel), and on the 2015 Latin Grammy Award winning album Entre 20 Aguas (also featuring Chick Corea, Dhafer Youssef, Michel Camilo, Chucho Valdéz and Alejandro Sanz). Tali was mentioned alongside Limón in Barack Obama's Favorite Songs of 2018 list. Tali's most recent album, Mémoire (produced by Limón), was released in July 2023. www.talirubinstein.com
Liza Bec is an innovative contemporary performer, composer and author. They built their own instrument, the roborecorder, which has been displayed in the Museum of Science and Industry, presented at Classical:NEXT 2024 and featured in New Scientist and Insider magazines. They were awarded the cross-disciplinary Fusion Fund by Help Musicians UK to create audiovisual EP and short story INNERVATE. In 2024 they held residencies at Britten Pears and Paraorchestra. Debut album The End Times was recorded at Real World Studios in Dolby Atmos and features an electroacoustic musical blackboard. www.lizabec.com
