Recorder31 Day 23 | Introducing the National Youth Recorder Orchestra

Recorder31 Day 23 | Introducing the National Youth Recorder Orchestra

This week, we are shining a light on the youngest players in our recorder-playing community for Recorder31. Our Youth Competition is still open for entries until tomorrow, and today we highlight talented young players in the National Youth Recorder Orchestra with an exclusive premiere of a new video celebrating this fabulous initiative.

Recorded on their recent summer residential course, this video gives an insight into the National Youth Recorder Orchestra (NYRO) in interviews with their course staff, tutors and participants. Aimed at young recorder players aged 8-25, NYRO runs two courses each year, one in the Easter holiday and one in the summer. Founded by the late Colin Touchin back in 2002, the ensemble continues to attract players from across the country who come together to celebrate and enhance their recorder skills.

Here's what the NYRO team have to say about the video:

Find out all about the National Youth Recorder Orchestra! Tutor Heidi Fardell describes this course as 'gold dust'… Watch the full video to find out more about the various courses, a brief history of NYRO and most importantly the voice of the students of NYRO! The photos and filming are by a former NYRO student, now professional viola and recorder player, Inis Oirr Asano and the audio is by the students themselves – what a talented bunch!

AND ...if you are in a position to support NYRO, please get in contact. They don’t have any financial support next year and this is the next generation of recorder players!! Just listen to their passion!

As a Recorder31 bonus, we're thrilled to share this video of NYRO tutor Chris Orton performing with his quartet Windu. Based in Spain, the quartet has put together a new programme entitled 'Winduvision' which combines recorder consort music with theatrical staging to create a very unique performance.
