This Folklora soprano recorder from Küng, is a special recorder for everyone wanting to play with an instrument tuned in Bb. It is made of palisander and has earthy, deep and string sound-tones. As a recorder in Bb it has many different uses:

  • A fourth flute (in modern pitch)
  • Play along with Bb transposing instruments (like the clarinet)
  • Folk music

Kung Folklora Soprano Recorder

What a lovely instrument! It speaks easily and clearly in all registers even though I am still playing it in. I am impressed with the overall tone quality in palisanda and particularly like the rich, sonorous lower notes. I like this recorder and it really is a pleasure to play.

Kung Folklora in Bb

I came across this instrument quite by chance when listening to Swiss folk music played by Oliver Marti. (Unfortunately, the instrument does not come with the hat and matching braces!) The sound is quite unlike the usual soprano/descant recorder, and the lower octave in particular has a beautifully rich full sound. I think it is perfect for lots of van Eyck, but almost any solo piece for descant will work well on this instrument. (Use the same fingering as on an alto - so, for example, what would be G on an alto is now C on the Folklora - the accompanist transposes down a 5th, and almost any baroque piece will acquire a fresh charm). It requires very little air (so one can play extended passages in one breath), and is extremely responsive, with a bright clarity. Highly recommended.
