Berio's "Gesti" was a groundbreaking work of contemporary music for recorder and requires an advanced level of playing

The work calls for (almost literally) breathtaking virtuosity - fingers, tongue and respiration must be skillfully co-ordinated. The instrumental sounds, combined over and over with the player's voice, occasionally have a humourous effect, such as when the recorder suggests a bird gone mad; in the final section, we hear that the instrument can sing, as well.
