Mollenhauer 5431K Denner Knick tenor c', cherrywood, with double keys for C/C#. A sophisticated ensemble set developed after original instruments of Jacob Denner (1681-1735) based in Nuremberg and Copenhagen. The instruments have a range of an octave and a sixth. Moeck offer these recorders with either renaissance or baroque fingerings, and if desired, they can be tuned to meantone temperament which, when using the original renaissance fingerings will make ensemble playing and the intonation of pure major thirds far easier. The original recorders were tuned to a=460 but Moeck have scaled their copies to a=440 Hz, which can be slightly adjusted by the short metal ring that links the tenons. When tuning the instruments, special care has been taken that the individual recorders blend well together and cannot be singled out by their sound or volume. 5455 Hotteterre tenor, castello boxwood. The Hotteterre family was a large and influential family of instrument makers, performers and composers based in France in the 17th and 18th centuries. The family brand mark was that of an anchor and there are three instruments, each bearing this mark, and thought to be by Jean Hotteterre upon which this particular instrument is based. Two of the originals are in the Musee de la Musique in Paris, the other is in the Frans Bruggen collection in Amsterdam. This recorder has a versatile two and a half octave range and is best suited to solo playing with its warm, powerful and highly expressive sound. The extended range provides opportunity to explore the baroque flute repertoire alongside original recorder literature and the instrument’s versatility is further highlighted by the proven success of its use in the modern repertoire.
