Recorder31 Day 27 | Historically Informed Summer School

During Recorder31 we like to throw the spotlight onto some of the fantastic courses, events and summer schools which take place throughout August. This week we've been exhibiting our pop-up exhibition stand at the Historically Informed Summer School in Beverley, and the course tutors have sent us a video of one of their recorder classes to share with you...

From its beginnings in 2010, Historically Informed Summer School (HISS) has enjoyed growing support and steady expansion. As its prime raison d’être they have been exploring the common grounds between early music, and its more formalised development, and the music of the people, embodied in traditional and folk music. This collaboration has remained at the heart of their international residential course over the past decade and more. Under the directorship of Graham Coatman, the course boasts a stellar cast of guest tutors including Mary Tyers, John Dipper, Alison Kinder and Tim Bayley, amongst many others.

Earlier in the week, course participants met with tutors Rebecca Austen-Brown, George Bartle and Adrian Woodward, to take part in their "Recorder Extravaganza" class – which became so extravagant that a few sackbut players were roped in for a spot of collaboration!

They performed this great rendition of Viadana's Sinfonia musicali a 8 Op 18 La Bergamasca, which is available to watch below, exclusive to Recorder31:

More information about HISS and their course programme is available on their website:

The Sound of Recorder Music!

Each day this month we're highlighting an audio clip of a recorder from our extensive range. The Triebert Bass Recorder in Matt Black Finish is one of the most affordable bass recorders on the market, and is available to pre-order this weekend, with new stock expected in late September. Listen to the clips below or follow this link to find out more about this instrument, exclusive to The Early Music Shop.
