One of the recorder's most iconic composers was Georg Philipp Telemann – and while his 12 Fantasias for Flute without Bass were originally intended for traverso, when transposed up a minor third they fit beautifully onto an alto recorder. So much so, that they have become staple repertoire for recorder players.
For this week's competition, we'd love to hear you play music from the Telemann Fantasias – whether you give us just one movement, a short excerpt or a whole Fantasia, you're welcome to enter!
The music for the Fantasias is available in the public domain here (click on the "arrangements and transcriptions" tab for versions transposed and scored for recorder).
(If you'd prefer a printed copy, why not try The Baroque Solo Book, in which the Fantasias and lots of other solo recorder pieces are printed! Available here for £18.00 GBP!)
There's some virtuosic writing in amongst the Fantasias, but also some slower and simpler moments, so this competition is open to players of all experience levels. Good luck and we look forward to hearing your performances!
HOW TO ENTER
THE PRIZE!
Courtesy of our friends at Aafab, we're thrilled to offer a brilliant Conservatorium Alto Recorder in Boxwood by Aura worth £465GBP!
The Conservatorium recorders by Aura are made in the Coolsma workshops in the Netherlands. They are based on Bressan recorders, with a curved, highly conical windway which produces a broad, rich sound. This Conservatorium alto is made of boxwood and is thumb-bushed.

The Sound of Recorder Music!
Each day this month we're highlighting an audio clip of a recorder from our extensive range. Here's another instrument from the popular Mollenhauer Denner series, a soprano in olivewood. The olivewood produces a warm sound which is rich in overtones and with the ability to project well. Listen to the clips below or follow this link to find out more about this instrument.
