Very clear, easy to understand. At beginners level
I was looking for a method suitable for someone (me) who is already musically literate, i.e. a method that hasn't had to trade off on instrument teaching to ensure the learner has mastered musical basics. This book is exactly what I wanted. While there are some token mentions, the book assumes that you have a teacher providing more general musical instruction, so for those already equiped there is little redundant material. Instead, it focuses on the recorder itself, with the notion of alternative fingerings (and when to use them) introduced by the second lesson, and two additional types of articulation introduced by the third. The book consists of (a) twelve main lessons, made up of a few exercises and short pieces each, (b) two sets of revision pieces (one after each chunk of 6 lessons), and (c) a resource section with technical exercises, pieces for duet/ trio/quartet, and reference material with a trill and ornamentation cheat-sheet and a fingering chart. Musical examples are pleasant, and exercises seem thoughtfully chosen. If you are learning alone, there are helpful questions interjected especially in the early lessons to remind you to be self-aware in your playing. If you are not learning alone, then many of the lesson pieces can be played as short duets with a teacher or friend. It's always a bit of a gamble buying something you haven't had the chance to flick through, but I can recommend this to anyone else in a similar learning situation.
