Plays well but has a bad smell

It is an interesting recorder which can be used to play F major with alto fingering. Unfortunately, the bore has a bad smell, not too strong but still not pleasant. I am trying different methods to get rid of the smell.

Fun for a former clarinet player

I'm a former clarinet player, so when I read about fourth flutes in Bb, I thought it would be fun to have one to play simple clarinet duets with, but I never thought I'd be able to find such a niche instrument at an affordable price. Imagine my surprise when a found one here for under $200. So I had to get one. Initially I was a little disappointed that the upper range was unresponsive and the two-piece construction means you can't adjust your pinkie, but the response really improved considerably after the first oiling, and the pinkie adjustment really isn't necessary. I'm not sure there's much use for it in an early music or recorder ensemble, but it suits my purposes of playing clarinet music at home just fine.

Worth considering

This is a gorgeous instrument to play! I know it's an unusual choice but, if you want to play with Bb instruments or if you play by ear and want to avoid some tricky keys, this is well worth its pricetag. It has a much richer sound than a standard descant so, if you fancy some unaccompanied Krahmer, this is perfect. One downside: it is a 2-piece instrument so the bottom hole cannot be moved to suit small hands.
