A baroque oboe d'amore after Eichentopf at a=415 (baroque pitch) by English maker Tony Millyard, available in unstained or stained boxwood.

This oboe d’amore is after the Eichentopf model in the museum in Venice.  The oboe d’amore is in the key of A, sounding a minor third below the normal C oboe. Although used mainly for playing Bach cantatas and his sacred pieces they were also used by other composers of the early 18th Century.  It is made of boxwood* and comes supplied with a soft roll case, reed, reed case, fingering chart and a document on how to care for the oboe. The staple/bocal is made with a slight bend to bring the instrument to a more comfortable playing position and the doubled hole three is made slightly off centre to bring this hole more easily to hand.

*Both unstained and stained finish currently in stock.

A truly amazing instrument

This is a remarkarble d'amore. Well done to the maker! We've tried a lot of differnet models over the years, but nothing like this one by Millyard. And the reeds that came with it, excellent! Highly recommended.

Beautiful instrument

This is a beautifully made d’amore. Plays very well in tune and comes with two reeds that suit it perfectly. So lucky to be able to purchase such a fine oboe ‘off the peg’ as it were.

A remarkable instrument at the price

I'm a beginner oboist but a semi-professional recorder and baroque flute player, so I know what I want from an instrument, but I don't have experience of other instruments to compare with. This instrument is generally easier to handle than the higher oboe, accepting that it needs a few different fingerings and the E and G in the second octave, as expected, need precise and deliberate intonation adjustments in opposite directions (E too sharp and G too flat). The action on the D# key is rather high, but it moves easily. I have the same maker's 415 oboe, which has a better action height on the D# key but an over-heavy spring. The bottom C (sounding A) speaks fairly easily, and is less ***** and better blended with the rest of the bottom register than on some instruments I have heard. Given the low economy of scale for a maker in producing an instrument like this, the price is fantastic.
