  • Tenor Gemshorn (a415) by Cip

    Cip
    £525.00
Czech maker Pavel Cip produces an extremely well made series of gemshorns which are processed and polished very carefully. The block is made of water resistant cedar. The tenor has a chromatic scale with a range of a 9th and a bottom note of C. This gemshorn is pitched at a=415, commonly known as Baroque pitch. The gemshorn was in use in the 15th century (there exists an organ stop of that name) and was primarily a pastoral instrument, not widely known after the mid-to-late 1500s until the resurgent interest in early music in the 20th century. The gemshorn is an early form of recorder, made of a cow horn with a fipple inserted at the wide end. It has an incredibly sweet sound due to the conical shape of the horn and has a range of one octave. The name comes from the German "chamois" horn, but the early history not well known, the oldest known illustration of one being seen in Musica Getutscht (1511), by Virdung. N.B. Due to the nature of these instruments each one will have a different appearance depending on the horn used!

Volume, tone and accuracy are all crucial when it comes to cutting across in any Irish traditional music session or gig. The weight of our whistles gives us the durability and stability needed when playing in the higher octaves. We work with some of the best whistle players in the world and receive feedback in which we use to improve our design. Materials Body: Our whistles are all made from brass which we believe gives a rich and bright tone. We finish off the whistles with a silverplating process over the brass. This silver plating gives the whistle an elegant look as well as maintaining a clean look for longer. Head: The head of the whistle consists of a polished Delrin® with the silver plated brass. To finish off the head we laser engrave our logo into the whistle adding the final touch. Tunability Our whistles are fully tuneable and can be adjusted to suit the players requirement. The whistle is set sharp which allows the player to manipulate the slide to perfectly in tune or flat. Maintenance Our whistles have very little maintenance but there are a few things we'd encourage to keep your whistle in the best condition. After each use clean the bore of the whistle with a mop to remove moisture. If the tuning slide of the whistle becomes stiff apply a small amount of cork grease. You can also disinfect the whistle with any alcohol wipes. Use a silver cleaning cloth to keep your whistle looking superb.

  • Monk Cornetto in G (a494) – Leather/Resin – by Jeremy West

    Monk
    £575.00
Monk Cornetto in G at a494 - Leather/Resin by Jeremy West - includes New Dutch Acorn Mouthpiece and Padded Bag. Whilst a494 is not a pitch in especially common use these days it does have historic precedent. The instrument makes a bright sound and is very easy in the hands compared to its counterpart at 440. And, with 494 being a whole tone above modern pitch, this cornett can be used for ensemble playing by transposing down one tone. It is worth considering this cornett if you have small hands and would struggle with the a440 instrument (which is similar in hand stretch to a tenor recorder). The late Christopher Monk's legacy to early music was the invention and development of the resin cornetto and the workshops now under the management of Jeremy West continue to produce some of the best and most widely played cornetti in the world. Modelled on a 17th Century original, formerly in the possession of the late Christopher Monk, this model is well-proven and the most generally accepted cornetto of its sort today. Fingering is much like a treble recorder in G. The resin version is the best selling cornetto in the world.
