Recorder31 Day 14 | An Interview & Giveaway from Aafab

Today we are thrilled to have an exclusive interview to share from Aafab, the recorder workshop in Utrecht, Netherlands, and for one lucky Recorder31 reader, the chance to own a brand-new Aura Conservatorium alto recorder in boxwood.

We’re reviving our Featured Maker blog in honour of this year’s Recorder31, where today the spotlight is on Aafab. Known for producing the Aura and Coolsma ranges, as handed over from Hans Coolsma around 35 years ago, we are pleased to stock their instruments at The Early Music Shop, and here’s a chance for you to get to know their range a little better.

About the prize

The Conservatorium recorders by Aura are made in the Coolsma workshops in the Netherlands. They are based on Bressan recorders, with a curved, highly conical windway which produces a broad, rich sound. This Conservatorium alto is made of boxwood and is thumb-bushed.

This recorder comes with a canvas zip-case, cleaning stick, cork grease and a fingering chart.

Comments

Dorothy Zemach - August 17, 2025

A trio arrangement of “Can She Excuse My Wongs?” for AAT recorders.

Patricia DeCorsey - August 17, 2025

I love playing any of the German tunes from my childhood, Alle Vögel, Himmel Und Erde, so many.

Antony Lamb - August 17, 2025

I’m really a beginner, so more trying than actually playing. Still, what is inspiring me at the moment is Georgia Tedde’s Austro, I really like the atmospheric, absorbing and playful qualities of this style music – for both playing and listening.

Robert Hopper - August 17, 2025

Currently my favorite piece is “Doen Daphne d’over schoone Maeght” by Jacob van Eyck. I am working through Mode 3.

Lealie - August 17, 2025

Favorite piece? That’s a tough one, because I use recorders in so many musical scenarios. I guess anything Bach.

Myrsini - August 15, 2025

Teleman fantasia Nr. 8 is lovely!

Chauna Bischoff - August 15, 2025

I love Amazing Grace on the Alto.

Jonas - August 15, 2025

My favourite piece for the alto is definitely Telemanns first Fantasia, always a pleasure to play it in great acoustics :))

Ricardo Ríos - August 15, 2025

I’m not really a solo player, inlike to play the alto part of the ensambles like “trains” of James D. Carey or Telemann’s canonic duets.

Elle King - August 15, 2025

currently i love the Handel sonata in c major especially the tempo di gavotta movement
