This work is a set of variations on The Earl of Essex's Galliard ("Can she excuse my
wrongs") by the great English lutenist-composer John Dowland. The variations evoke not only the age of Elizabeth I but also that of Elizabeth II with a motoric moto perpetuo and a sultry laid-back blues - no surprise that Moore himself was an accomplished jazz pianist who worked with Humphrey Lyttelton, amongst others!
