Mollenhauer TE4118 Dream Edition Soprano In Plumwood. Due to their characteristic wide bore and full round sound Dream-Edition recorders are also suitable for demanding solo recorder repertoire. These hand-finished instruments in European plumwood with maple decorative rings combine a colourful rich sound with a stable tone. Baroque fingering and double holes provide surprising agility.

Produced in collaboration with reputable Dutch recorder maker Adriana Breukink, the Dream range is a popular choice of instrument with all levels of player. They produce a sound that is full and powerful like the renaissance originals but with an easy response over two octaves.  The Dream recorder is also popular with folk musicians who require a louder instrument for performance with amplified instruments.

Mollenhauer Dream Edition soprano in plumwood

A very attractive, well-made instrument. I’m still playing it in but from the start it played the full range easily. Both the high and low notes are strong and stable, robust but melodious. Excellent for mediaeval, folk and contemporary music. The larger than usual finger holes and their spacing take a little getting used to but this is a welcome addition to my recorder collection.

It’s a lovely instrument with good tone. I’m still playing it in but it promises to be an excellent addition to my collection. As always, excellent service from EMS.

A beautiful tone

I held off reviewing until I'd played my dream soprano in well. This plumwood version has a beautiful tune, intonation is very good across the range. Initially I wasn't so sure about second octave C but that sounds great now. It took me a few weeks of playing before the high notes on this came more easily (longer than it's taken on other instruments). Now that it's played in I'm really enjoying it. It has good volume but it isn't the loudest soprano I have (and I don't have any of the more expensive 'modern' instruments). There is a richness and mellowness to the tone that I wasn't expecting and yet it has greater clarity than a maple or pearwood instrument. I bought mine for folk tunes but am enjoying playing all sorts of repertoire on it. Highly recommend.

Mollenhauer Dream Edition Soprano Recorder in Plumwood

This is a superb instrument with easier response in the upper octave than the pearwood model. It gives a full round sound like renaissance recorders but with standard (Baroque) fingering. Excellent for playing with other instruments in folk and world music as well as more usual recorder repertoire. I also have the tenor model which performs beautifully.
