The standard 7 string Bass Viol after Nicholas Bertrand (1704). This viol is modelled after a French bass viol by Bertrand and is particularly suitable for French baroque repertoire where a full, rich sound is required. Made from very high quality wood, these viols combine excellent craftsmanship with an appealing sound and a beautiful appearance. The ribs, back and neck are made of sycamore, the top of spruce, and the fingerboard and tailpiece of maple. The wood is fully kiln-dried for stability.

String length: 700 mm
Corpus length: 693 mm
Corpus width: Up 327 mm / Mid 235 mm / Low 396 mm

A Lovely Viol

I purchased a 7-string in 2021, it has a robust, even tone. The setup was very good, with string height and gauge well-calibrated. No wolves. It has been a great instrument to grow into. It is powerful enough to play solo repertoire, and you can easily blend into consort as well. There is a nice range of color shading available area-notably in the upper range. It is a great instrument for not only beginners, but mid-level and even professional players. The neck width from fingerboard to back of neck is a bit deep; however, it has not presented a problem and no other players have commented on it as well. The packing and shipping was exceptionally good with no problems: a big relief for international shipping. Every one at the Early Music Shop is extremely helpful and will answer your questions with expertise and professionalism.

Excellent service

As a new and novice learner on the bass viol I cannot comment with any experience on the sound or playing quality of the Lu-Mi bass viol. I can however say that the service in sending the viol safely by courier and my initial playing of the instrument suggest all is well. I am an experienced cellist and the sound quality with my elementary viol skills is still good but as yet limited.

A lovely instrument, sounds great and is comfortable to play

As a cellist, I wondered how the instrument would feel. I need not have worried - the setup is perfect and I was soon making pleasing sounds. Now I just have to get my brain around the fingering and get used to finding the string I want. If you've always wanted to try a seven-string bass viol, this instrument is exactly what you need.
