I am still playing this in, but you know you have a truly good recorder when it is sounding even better than you imagined during the initial 3 weeks! So I am very very glad I chose this instrument as my 'all rounder' soprano- (I have an equally beloved Renaissance one which I will review next!)
To be brief: Everything written about the Kung Superio range promotionally is true!
Here's my own promotion: I wanted a hardwood instrument that was strong, resonant and carrying for solo performances of Baroque to Contemporary music and because I often busk outdoors- a recipe for lost-in-the-breeze problems with recorders! --- Not so with this model! I have never played a hardwood recorder before, and in fact this is only my second purchased wooden descant in life but I researched the qualities and got many recommendations, and boy is the Kung loud! ... I understand this has todo with the windway and bore, not just the wood variety, however I also went with Palisander for the overtones; rich, velvety and flute like, especially in the middle register and lower notes (the bottom octave D and C you can blow pretty damn hard and it sings them out loudly without that infernal squeaking that often occurs when you try this on plastic recorders) and I wanted richer more layered sound colours to counter the descants sometimes shrill and piercing tones- job done!
This recorder is perfect for all my non Medieval and Renaissance needs!
Another perk is that it likes a high blowing pressure so when I need that extra push outdoors or during a particularly impassioned phrase, it doesn't easily blow sharp. It has so much more potential for expressive tonal variation and it responds beautifully to subtle changes of articulation... just what I wanted. I could go on...
I absolutely love my Kung and aesthetics wise, it is just gorgeous. The dark swirling grain of the wood is something that attracts comments from many including my teacher who declared it a work of art as well as a very fine instrument.
The only other thing I would add is the fact that a certain well known recorder player has reviewed, and given a marvelous demonstration of the Olivewood one and that kind of sold it to me as well... Even though we know the recorder is always going to sound like no-one else but you at the end of the day!
