Kung Superio Alto Recorder in Olivewood

I took delivery of this recorder, with two other similarly-priced items, on approval a couple of weeks ago. My initial thought was that I preferred the Kung on looks (the other two were a Moeck in rosewood and a Mollenhauer in grenadilla) but the EMS were offering the chance to try all three, so why not? I have played a Kung tenor recorder in bubinga for over 40 years, and I love that. I really like the tone of the Kung alto - the Moeck and the Mollenhauer were good too. I was looking for a new challenge in our continued state of lockdown and learning the alto properly was what I decided to do, hence the purchase. I’m still restricted on the amount of time that I can reasonably play the instrument until it has been “blown in” over the next few weeks, but it makes (to my ear) a very attractive mellow sound. I’m practising mostly Bach and Handel at the moment and thoroughly enjoying myself. The recorder responds well to my attempts at reaching the higher notes, and my breath control is improving when it comes to the lower ones. I’m looking forward to many happy years playing this recorder. It’s still early days, but so far I think it’s a wonderful instrument.
