Baroque violin attributed to John Johnson, mid-18th century, including Matthew Coultman transitional bow c.1990.

An original and authentic Baroque Violin attributed to the English maker, John Johnson (1719c1762). Formerly played by the distinguished violinist Elizabeth Wallfisch, this fine baroque violin has been enjoyed by Andrew Bernardi for many years. The violin has its original neck, and plays with a sweet and strong sound emanating from a beautiful golden-brown violin.

Johnson worked in London’s Cheapside, east of St Paul’s. He was apprenticed to the London maker Daniel Wright from 1732 and inherited his business in 1740. Johnson’s instruments are known for their fine workmanship.

This instrument can be viewed and played in our Snape Maltings store.
