Viol Ensemble

In this edition J. S. Bach's Three-Part Inventions have been arranged for 3 Viols (TrTB). The 14 Inventions are presented in two volumes. The note values of all but one of the fourteen arrangements have been doubled to assist consort violists more accustomed to those encountered in 17th century fantasias. However, these pieces will stretch the abilities of most players, with their long notes succeeded by short note passages, frequent chromatic themes, leaps, and notes covering the entire range of each instrument. An arrangement of keyboard pieces by Francois Roberday for 4 viols (TrTr/TTB). First published in 1660, these pieces, primarily for organ, were printed on four separate staves, as was the case for other similar contrapuntal music by Froberger, Frescobaldi. Each fugue is followed by a variant fugue and often by a caprice where the theme is varied, usually with lively rhythms and syncopations.
