Recorder31 Day 21 | Friday Fun!

It's Friday, so here at Recorder31 that can only mean one thing – it's time for another Friday Fun! This week, rather than setting you a recorder-related puzzle, we'd love you to grab your instruments and join in!

Our Recorder31 team member, Olivia Petryszak, recorded one of the two parts for 'Chirintana' – a 15th Century Italian dance tune, adapted from the arrangement in Terry Carter's 'A Taborer's Treasury: Volume 1'... For your Friday Fun challenge, all you have to do is play along!

Click here to download the music in PDF format.

We'd love to see your interpretations! If you fancy recording a version (or making a duet-style video on Instagram or TikTok) tag us on social media or send it to us via email at recorder31@earlymusicshop.com – we may even share some of our favourite renditions!

And if you like where this is coming from, why not explore more music in this style with Terry Carter's fabulous series of tunebooks, 'A Taborer's Treasury'? Recently republished by The Early Music Shop's publishing division, Jaywood Press, these books contain dance tunes arranged for pipe and tabor, but also suitable for other melody instruments including recorder (and violin, reeds, hurdy gurdy, and more!)

Today we are showcasing a true masterwork of modern Japanese woodwind making: the Takeyama Soprano in Tamana.

Crafted by the renowned Takeyama workshop using Tamana — a rare, finely grained wood prized for its stunning stability and rich acoustic character. The result is an extraordinary soprano recorder that balances shimmering agility with a deep, velvety fundamental.

As you listen, take note of the effortless fluid response across register leaps. Tamana gives the instrument a uniquely sweet, focused core with a gentle bloom on sustained notes. The upper octave speaks with sparkling clarity and complete refinement, offering a refined, vocal sweetness that never turns harsh or breathy. A dream instrument for soloist performance.
