Recorder31 Day 11 | New Releases on CD

Recorder31 is about celebrating the depth and breadth of the recorder scene, and the sheer variety of music on offer is so exciting to see. Today we've rounded up just a few of the new albums which have been released since last year's Recorder31, all of which are available on CD from The Early Music Shop.

Erik Bosgraaf & filoBarocco • Folk Baroque

This month’s Featured Album is a unique collaboration between recorder player Erik Bosgraaf and Italian ensemble filoBarocco, reimagining music of the Rostock Manuscript in striking, speculative arrangements which take these Polonaise dance tunes to an entirely new and creative place.

Musurgia Ensemble • Pierre de la Rue: Missa Iste Confessor Domini

A specialist, but captivating look at the 17^th century manuscripts of the Santa Cruz monastery in Coimbra, Portugal. With a recorder consort (featuring director João Francisco Távora and Robert Ehrlich) joining forces with two voices, the ensemble creates a rich, polyphonic tapestry with this sacred music, proving a fascinating look at some little-known repertoire.

Hester Groenleer & Matthias Havinga • The Ayres We Breathe

Hester Groenleer, known for her work with The Royal Wind Music, hops across the water from her native Amsterdam for this disc of English songs, dances and grounds. The recorder, accompanied with skill and delicacy by Matthias Havinga, dances around with a lightness and airiness which makes the album’s title very fitting. Passacaglia • La Parisienne

A previous Featured Album (read our full blog by clicking here), this album, featuring Annabel Knight on recorders and baroque flute, explores suites and pieces by cousins Pierre and Anna Danican Philidor as they journeyed to Paris. It’s a stylish and stately programme of rarely-performed French baroque masterpieces.

Finn Collinson • Byway

A member of the Recorder31 team, Finn Collinson places the recorder in a contemporary folk setting with guitars and percussion. ‘Byway’ is a journey around the UK inspired by beautiful landscapes, combining original compositions with 18^th and 19^th century manuscript dance tunes, reimagined in new arrangements by Finn and his band.

Giovanni Antonini & Sheng-Fang Chiu • Byrd and the Bird

An unusual but charming programme for recorder duet featuring Giovanni Antonini and Sheng-Fang Chiu, where Telemann and Hottetere rub shoulders with Bártok and more in a series of intricate and playful duets. The title track by contemporary composer Giovanni Sollima closes the album, and mixes Byrd-esque melodies with striking birdsong imitations on sopranino recorder.

Barock_Plus • Kaleidosonic: Early Sounds, New Light

Featuring recorder players Tabea Wink and Marie Sophie Wunder, this album offers a mixed programme of often-heard and lesser-known works by Telemann, Corelli, Handel and more. Interconnected not just musically but also personally, these works explore the range of textures and, fittingly, colours in this high baroque repertoire.

Michala Petri & Marie Nishiyama • On A Ground

Released about a year ago, one of her generation’s best-loved recorder players returned with a beautifully delicate album in collaboration with baroque harpist Marie Nishiyama. Exploring the ground bass in repertoire from Diego Ortiz to Erik Satie – with a suite of grounds by Petri’s partner Lars Hannibal – this is a gentle investigation of one of the most powerful compositional devices.

Special Mention!

Olivia Petryszak • Volatus

This release is not available on CD, but given it’s by another member of our Recorder31 team we thought it deserved a special mention! Olivia Petryszak joins forces with a varied cast of accompanying guests for a six-track demonstration of her unique and distinctive recorder style, with punchy pattern-based melodies and moments of tranquil stillness.

Palisander gives this Conservatorium tenor a crisp, dark edge and fantastic tonal authority. You will notice immediate punch of the lower notes.
