To celebrate the end of the year, we have one more special album to introduce to you all as a 'bonus' Featured Album. Recorded at the London International Festival of Early Music in November 2024, this exclusive release is a snapshot of a memorable festival and a sparkling celebration of virtuosity, imagination, and the spirit of early music.
Released by The Early Music Shop on our own label, the disc contains recordings by all of the festival artists recorded live in concert at St Michael & All Angels Church, Blackheath.
Festival Artistic Director Erik Bosgraaf performs alongside virtuosic Italian ensemble filoBarocco in extracts from their programme 'Telemann Goes East', a speculative construction of music inspired by the traditional music of Poland through the eyes of one of the Baroque masters. Fellow headline artists The Royal Wind Music close the album with the spectacular sounds of their eleven-piece recorder consort, playing Renaissance music inspired by the cathedral of Seville. (Their album of this programme, The Orange Tree Courtyard was a previous Featured Album upon its release in 2023.) Award-winning Baroque ensemble La Vaghezza also feature, with Italian chamber music by Falconieri and Merula.
Lunchtime concerts included on the disc include viol virtuoso Robert Smith with Nicholas Achten on lute, playing music from Oxford Bodleian manuscripts by John Jenkins. The English music continues with a chromatic pavan and galliard by John Bull, performed on harpsichord by Maciej Skreczkowski. Meanwhile, the winner of the 2023 SRP/Moeck Solo Recorder Competition, Jiyeon Bang, performs music by Vivaldi and Corelli with harpsichord accompaniment from Masumi Yamamoto.
This album is a fitting memory of a special festival, a perfect taster for those yet to visit LIFEM, or a wide-spanning sampler of instrumental music for early music fans both old and new.
