We've commissioned Stephen Haddock to produce an exclusive range of inexpensive lutes that are suitable for beginners and more advanced players. He has produced a handmade collection of 6, 7 and 8-course lutes based on originals by Giovanni Hieber and this Descant Lute in A after Tieffenbrucker
This lute is after, but not a exact copy of a descant lute by Tieffenbruker Padua in Vienna Kunsthist Mus’, and dates from 1582. The original has 19 ribs with 7 courses, but Stephen has made this with 11 ribs to give it a slightly more rounded body and 6 courses.
Stephen uses a variety of woods and materials for this 6-course lute. They are typically made of:
- Back - Sycamore & cherrywood ribs with a stained maple inlay
- Neck & Pegbox: Cherrywood
- Bridge & Fingerboard: Plumwood
- Pegs & Button: Boxwood
- Nut: Bone
- Soundboard: Alpine Spruce
- Finish: Oil Varnish
Tuning: A D G B E A
Strings
This lute has a string length of 530mm and is strung in unison with Aquila Nylgut strings. For replacement strings view the stringing chart for Haddock's instruments.
