Clavichord by Robert Goble, 1960 (Previously Owned by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies)
PO Ref. PO1183S
Clavichord by Robert Goble (1960), previously owned by composer Sir Peter Maxwell Davies (1934–2016), Master of the Queen’s Music, 2004–14
A rare opportunity to acquire a unique piece of musical history. For more than a quarter of a century this Goble clavichord went everywhere with Peter Maxwell (‘Max’) Davies and was the instrument on which some of his greatest music was composed. A 1961 BBC Monitor film about Peter Maxwell Davies shows him composing at his desk and then trying out what he had written at this clavichord. For over two decades this clavichord was Max’s principal instrument. He had it transported from Dorset to Orkney (where he settled in the early 1970s).
