This popular, affordable student lute from the Early Music Shop is made after original lutes by Hieber. It is an ideal instrument for a beginner and is highly recommended by our resident lute tutors Jacob Heringman and Wezi Elliott.

Watch a short clip of this lute in action (performed by Jacob Heringman)!

The 8 course lute is ideally suited for a beginner lutenist wanting to play a wide range of solo repertoire as well as lute-songs. It is also perfect for continuo playing!

Our own range of lutes were completely re-designed in 2015. There were many issues with our old lutes, for example the string-spacing and action. These issues have been addressed with these new designs as well as further improvements made.

Very Pleased

I've been working on building a lute for the past year and while it is has been a fun project, I'm eager to start playing. The affordability of this student lute was too tempting to pass up and though it was still scary to spend so much, it is worth every penny. Everything was packed well and arrived safely and quickly. The lute has a beautiful sound and feels great to hold. The workmanship is high quality considering it is a beginner's lute; the ribs, soundboard, neck, and pegbox are all well made and finished. The semi-rigid carry case is nice to have and I appreciate the lute came strung with a full set of strings. If you're a beginner like me though, consider ordering a few extra sets of the high G4 string, I snapped two strings in a row while tuning (my own inexperience, no fault of the strings). Overall I'm very pleased with this purchase. I look forward to many, many hours of learning this lovely instrument!

A Nicely Finished Instrument

I have owned a baroque lute for many years and this is my first renaissance lute purchase. The workmanship looks to be excellent, especially so for an instrument in the lower-end of the expected price bracket. It's a surprisingly loud instrument with good intonation. Nylgut strings are a bonus and they sound superb. The lute has a playable string-action with good string spacing plus comfortable frets. I do enjoy the convenience of a gigbag and this is very welcome, but will definitely upgrade this as an option for particular occasions. Others have told me that they love the sound that this Heiber lute makes. The staff at the Early Music Shop are friendly and professional; the service and communications throughout the process from the initial order to after the delivery was first-class. I would definitely recommend this instrument as a first lute.

Very happy with my new lute

I have a Charles Ford 8 course lute but wanted another lute for playing outside and in pubs etc and that had a strap button, so I bought this. The strings are further from the sound board so I can really play loudly when I want. It is beautifully made and the wood is all very nice looking. If anything it is louder than my Charles Ford although the tone is not so plummy, it’s is more guitar like in tone, but that may partly be just be the new strings settling in and it being brand new. The case is very good quality too. I’m delighted with my new instrument.

Beautiful instrument, impeccable company

Instrument is beautiful and much more than had expected at this price entry. Additionally, we had trouble receiving abroad and company went above and beyond to remedy the situation. The craftsmanship deserves praise and the caliber of company will have us returning again. Have already shared this resource with friends and family. Highly recommend.
