Take it Away is Live

We're very excited to announce that we are part of the Take it Away scheme. This fantastic scheme helps young musicians get their hands on their perfect instrument at the start of their musical journey.

One problem with music and learning to play an instrument is that it's expensive. But the rewards of music and playing an instrument are well documented:

  • it makes you smarter
  • it relives stress
  • it builds confidence
  • it improves memory
  • it increases discipline and time management skills
  • it boosts creativity

And the list goes on!

A quick search online for the benefits of learning an instrument brings up a wealth of articles including this one from the BBC.

Quite often a barrier to people taking up music is the cost of owning a god quality instrument. There are often options at the start such as hiring or buying a cheap instrument. However, these aren't long term solutions.

Starting on a cheap, beginner instrument is often the best option. You want to know whether you are going to get on with the instrument, whether it's the right instrument for you.

But once you've decided on learning that instrument, the cheap instrument can make your learning process harder and less enjoyable. They can be more difficult to play than better quality, specialist instruments. Often more effort and skill is required to produce a beautiful sound on them. All of which can lead to frustration, a negative learning experience and possibly quitting.

Hiring an instrument, especially one like the harp, can be the best option when starting. However it will cost more than owning an instrument in the long run.

That's where Take it Away comes in!

Take it away offers interest free credit on musical instruments, equipment, software and tuition. The 0% APR loans are available for purchases (or part purchases) between £100 and £5000. It's available to 18-25 year olds and anyone buying an instrument for someone under 18.

Take it away works with retail partners, Arts Council England and the Arts Council of Northern Ireland to break down barriers to accessing music making. A part of Creative United, a community interest company that drives economic growth and social impact in the arts and creative industries, they provide a range of subsidised and non-subsidised loans. These are designed to make learning, playing and participating in music more affordable and open to everyone. Together with partners like us, they look to enable and inspire a life-long love of music.

One of the best things about working at the Early Music Shop is being part of the journey that is choosing a musical instrument. It can be overwhelming with all the choices, which is why we have experts on hand to help! We know how important it is to get it right. After all, as you can see from the benefits above, it's a lifetime investment.
